Letters Against Isolation
Who We Are
Letters Against Isolation was founded in 2020 by teenage sisters, Shreya and Saffron, who began writing letters to seniors during the COVID-19 lockdowns. What started as a simple way to bring comfort during a lonely time quickly grew into a global movement.
Today, LAI is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit connecting tens of thousands of seniors with caring letter-writers across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia. Our mission is simple: send real letters that help seniors feel more connected to the world around them. We believe in the power of small, kind gestures to brighten someone’s day and remind them they’re not alone.
What We Do
We organize volunteers of all ages to send personal, uplifting letters to seniors in care homes and community programs. Since 2020, our community has mailed more than 1 million letters in over 40 languages, helping isolated seniors feel remembered, valued, and connected.

After signing up, you'll receive weekly updates and access to our online portal, where you can pledge letters to senior care facilities and programs locally and around the world.
Highlights/Requirements
- Write friendly letters with a personal touch through sharing your stories, experiences, and interests. These unique-to-you messages help the reader feel connected.
- Keep it positive, avoiding sensitive topics that might make the reader feel sad or excluded.
- You'll be responsible for your own supplies and postage.
- Write your letters first, then log into our web portal to choose from our list of active requests. This list is updated regularly; please don't pledge your letters until you're ready to mail them.
